Shimewaza
The art of shimewaza–strangling techniques–is the most esoteric branch of judo. Difficult and complex, it is at the same time swift and deadly. No one can afford to treat a shimewaza expert casually.
Although relatively light, Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki–world champion in the 65k category in 1981–demonstrated this in a successful competition career that often found him facing much bigger men both in team competitions and in the dojo.
In this–the most comprehensive survey of shimewaza ever undertaken–he catalogues the main techniques. He explains the historically important juji-jime and meticulously details those techniques which are of particular relevance in judo today such as okuri-eri-jime and sangaku-jime.
His exposition is enriched by numerous competition photographs as well as interesting chapters on the history of shimewaza and Kashiwazaki’s own personal experience.
Shimewaza is an important contribution to judo literature.
